Leeds United news – Corberan is going nowhere

In news just breaking through, carried by LeedsLive digital journalist Beren Cross (Twitter – below), Carlos Corberan is not moving away from Leeds United.

Last week, Phil Hay, the soon-to-be departing Yorkshire Evening Post reporter, said that the Whites had been approached by Spanish third-tier side Cultural Leonesa with a view to becoming their new boss.

Corberan started at Leeds United when former Whites boss Thomas Christiansen took the helm ahead of the 2017/18 season. He was kept on under Paul Heckingbottom and also continued his role under current boss Marcelo Bielsa.

However, that continuity meant very little to Spanish side Cultural Leonesa who  enquired about his availability with a view to appointing him as their new manager. Leonesa are, as Leeds fans know, are part of the Qatar-based Aspire Academy that the Whites have an official partnership with.

On the strength of that link up, Ivan Bravo, who is the head of Aspire, is also a United board member. Hay writes that “Bravo is understood to have singled out Corberan” as a potential replacement for José Manuel Aira.

This pursuit is, of course, understandable what with the success that Corberan has helped instill into the Under-23s at Leeds United. Last season, the young Whites won both their North division and the National title in the Professional Development League. Added to that impressive haul, they also reached the semi-final stage of the Premier League Cup.

Yet, Carlos Corberan is more than just the Under-23s coaching maestro. alongside that important role at Elland Road, Corberan has also been co-opted onto Bielsa’s first-team backroom staff. He has thus become a trusted aide to Bilesa, one that is seeing through the smooth transition of Bielsa’s football philosophy and style to the Under-23s.

As Hay mentions above, despite Aspire always being around, the move of Corberan back to his native Spain and into third-tier management just didn’t ring true. In this case, that is a blessing to Leeds United as a club, and the Under-23s in particular.
