Norwich interested in Swiss international

German tabloid Bild have reported that The Canaries are planning a move for Borussia Mönchengladbach forward Josep Drmic.

Drmic’s contract at Borussia-Park expires at the end of this month, at which point he would become a free agent, and is expected to leave the club. Despite featuring in Switzerland’s Nations League games against Portugal and England last week, the striker has failed to establish himself as a regular at Mönchengladbach since his 2015 move from Bayer Leverkusen.

The Swiss international has been hampered by injuries, making only two starts last term as Mönchengladbach achieved an impressive fifth placed finish in the league. Despite limited action Drmic mustered two goals following his return from injury, an impressive return from a striker that only managed 1.4 shots per game after his return.

The forward had been linked with a move to Premier League club last summer as Bournemouth, Burnley and Watford all registered interested in Drmic. However, with Drmic no longer requiring a transfer fee, he is expected to attract no shortage of suitors this summer.

Norwich have made their pursuit of a striker this summer no secret. The Canaries need to reduce the pressure placed on 2019 Championship Player of the Year Teemu Pukki, whilst also increasing competition for places as they prepare to affirm their Premier League status next season. Drmic would offer top-flight experience that often proves invaluable for newly promoted sides, as well as being ready to chip in with vital goals.

This news follows Norwich’s pursuit of Jordan Rhodes, with the potential move for the forward having been slowed by Sheffield Wednesday demanding a £7 million transfer fee. However, The Canaries may prefer Drmic to Rhodes due to the need to secure a striker that they know can perform in England’s top tier.
