Leeds United boss Bielsa claiming big money from former club – court date pending

Leeds United have had their fair share of fair weather managers what with the likes of David Hockaday and Darko Milanic managing at the Elland Road club when run at the hand of Massimo Cellino.

That’s why the appointment of Marcelo Bielsa is like a breath of fresh air blowing through a putrid swamp of decaying managerial appointments. His style of football, the manner of his play and the general demeanour of the Argentinian has brought hope to Leeds United.

Not only has hope been brought to the club, so has success. He turned around a club who were bobbling around treading water in mid-table and in danger of being swamped by the bow waves of other clubs.

It’s his straight-laced demeanour though that has struck a resonant chord with Leeds United fans. He’s a man of very high principles, a ‘word is my bond’ type of person. Evidence of that side of him can be seen in the way that he personally paid the £200,000 fine levied against Leeds United for the SpyGate incident with Derby County.

Indeed, when he has the bit between his teeth on a moralistic issue, Marcelo Bielsa seems like un perro con un hueso. That principled approach, according to a story running in French publication L’Equipe yesterday, is about to be seen again in the near future.

L’Equipe are reporting that Bielsa is intending to take former employers Lille to court in France over claims related to his 2017 sacking from the French club. The article mentions that, not only is Bielsa intending to take Lille to court, that the Argentine coaching legend “intends to represent himself.”

L’Equipe mention “serious misconduct in December 2017” and then advance to claim that Bielsa will be putting forward for a substantial payout. They say that the “Argentine coach [Bielsa] still claims just under €19 million” from the Ligue 1 club, adding that it is a sum “to which are added a little less than €4 million gross for his four former assistants.”

Leeds United fans would expect nothing less from a manager who’s made such a huge impression on them in just one season at the helm. They are eagerly awaiting the upcoming campaign and his second season at the helm.
