Former-Leeds and Liverpool striker reportedly set to take up Middlesbrough assistant manager role

Middlesbrough are set to announce their new manager this week, with Jonathan Woodgate expected to be the given the role.

His backroom staff will join him soon after, and Premier League legend Robbie Keane is to be a huge part of that, according to RTE.

The report states that Keane has confirmed the offer to join Woodgate as his second in command, but he would still stay on in his role as assistant manager under Mick McCarthy in the Republic of Ireland international set up.

Talks began this week between Keane and the Middlesbrough hierarchy, and Ireland’s record goalscorer is considering accepting the offer.

The pair played together at Tottenham Hotspur between 2008 and 2011, winning the League Cup in their first season in the same team. They have been in regular contact since they parted ways in 2011, with Keane joining LA Galaxy and Woodgate signing for Stoke City that year.

During his playing career, the former-Spurs, Liverpool and Leeds striker scored 126 league goals in 349 appearances, meaning he is one of just 28 players to reach over 100 Premier League goals.

He currently sits 14th in the list of all time Premier League goalscorers, and Boro fans will be hoping he can add some attacking impetus into their play after being the lowest scorers in the top half of the Championship last season.

It is also rumoured former Everton and Manchester United assistant manager Steve Round would follow Woodgate and Keane to Middlesbrough, and he could make up another part of Boro’s new look backroom staff next season.
