Bristol City’s hopes of signing star defender boosted by Chelsea transfer stance

A report from Football League World has said that Premier League side Chelsea are willing to let defender Tomas Kalas leave the club on a permanent basis this summer, with Championship outfit Bristol City keen to bring back the former loan star.

Chelsea defender Tomas Kalas spent the 2018/19 season on loan at Ashton Gate with Bristol City, becoming a firm favourite thanks to his consistently impressive performances.

In the close season, Robins boss Lee Johnson has made no secret of the fact that he is keen to bring Kalas back to Bristol City this summer, despite admitting that it could be difficult with other clubs lurking. The club are willing to make him their most paid player and with Chelsea now reportedly willing to let the Czech international leave permanently, Bristol City will be hoping they can complete a deal.

The two clubs have been in talks over a permanent move for Kalas over recent weeks but there has yet to be a breakthrough made, but the latest development could help the appropriate parties kick on to bring Kalas to Ashton Gate.

Kalas enjoyed a thoroughly successful spell at Ashton Gate this season, playing in a total of 41 games across all competitions. He formed a strong centre-back partnership with Robins star Adam Webster, also playing frequently alongside Jake Wright when Lee Johnson utilised a three at the back system.

The 26-year-old has been out on loan away from Chelsea seven times since joining the club in 2011. He has spent time with Sigma Olomouc, Vitesse, FC Koln, Middlesbrough, Fulham (twice) and Bristol City.
