Plymouth Argyle join race for Carlisle playmaker

Plymouth Argyle have reportedly joined the race to sign Carlisle playmaker Jamie Devitt, PlymouthLive understands.

The 28-year-old playmaker would become the Pilgrims’ first signing since their appointment of new manager Ryan Lowe, with speculation rising after the midfielder followed Lowe on Twitter. However Argyle would have to compete for Devitt’s signature, with Blackpool, Swindon and Salford having already registered their interest in the Irishman.

Devitt boasted an impressive return during the 2018/19 season, bagging 12 goals and 8 assists in all competitions as he finished as The Cumbrians’ second top scorer. Such statistics led him to be named Carlisle Players’ Player of the Year in their both of their past two campaigns. However, the midfielder has made it clear that he is looking for a new challenge as he rejected a new contract which would have made him the highest paid player at Brunton Park.

Argyle’s interest likely results from rumours regarding current attacking midfielders Ruben Lameiras and Graham Carey. Both have been linked with moves away from Home Park this summer, following the club’s relegation from League One on the final day of the season. Devitt provides a like-for-like replacement for fellow Irishman Carey, well-suited to Ryan Lowe’s attacking and expansive brand of football.

If Devitt signs, he would be the first signing in Lowe’s overhaul of Plymouth Argyle this summer. The transition from former manager Derek Adams’ defensive system to Lowe’s attacking philosophy will likely require a huge turnover of personnel. Midfielders Jamie Ness and Yann Songo’o and defender Ryan Edwards have already confirmed their departure, meaning gaps in the squad already exist for Lowe to fill.
