Middlesbrough join race for West Brom and Derby-linked League One defender

As previously reported on The72, Barnsley defender Liam Lindsay is interesting a whole host of Championship clubs this transfer window.

Now according to The Sun, another club has joined the race to sign Lindsay, with Middlesbrough the fifth club to post an interest, joining Derby, Stoke, West Brom and Brentford in the pursuit for the young Scot.

The news comes off the back of a rejected offer from Italian Serie A newbies Brescia, as they look to bolster their squad following promotion. Le Rondinelle tabled a bid of £1 million for Lindsay, however Barnsley knocked this back in the hope of holding out for a more substantial figure.

The report suggests the quintet of interested Championship clubs have been placed on high alert, as they attempt to bring in the Scottish defender this transfer window.

Lindsay was a huge part of Daniel Stendel’s side’s promotion back to the second tier, with Barnsley finishing second behind champions Luton Town. Realistically, the Tykes will be hoping to keep hold of one of their prized assets for the coming season.

Middlesbrough already have youngster Dael Fry and seasoned Championship veterans Aden Flint and Dani Ayala at their disposal at centre-back.

But they will be hoping of adding a fourth defender to their ranks after losing Ben Gibson to Burnley last summer, and with Danny Batth ending his loan spell early to return to Wolves in January.

Barnsley boss Stendel is also in the frame for the vacant Middlesbrough managerial role, and if given the job he could try to persuade Lindsay to follow him to the Riverside.
