Carlisle complete signing of former Aston Villa man

Carlisle have today completed the signing of former Aston Villa man Harry McKirdy according to their official website.

McKirdy is one of a number of players to have been released by Villa this summer and he has now put pen to paper on a one year deal with the League Two club.

He has previously been on loan at Stevenage, Crewe and Newport in League Two so he is no stranger to the fourth tier of English football.

The 22-year-old had been with Villa since the age of 14 and progressed through their youth system but ultimately failed to break into their first team and has now left the club.

His most recent loan spell came with losing play-off finalists Newport last season where McKirdy played 13 times – 11 from the bench – and scored one goal.

He is a welcome addition at Brunton Park after they faced a mass exodus of players this summer and he is ready to hit the ground running with United after a chat with manager Steven Pressley convinced him to join.

McKirdy said: “After leaving Villa I had a few phonecalls and when I spoke to the gaffer he was the one that excited me the most.”

“I met him on Wednesday, and what he had to say was interesting to me. I’ve ended up signing here and I’m looking forward to next season.”

He claimed that the fresh challenge and enthusiasm of his new boss was what made his decision to come to the club an easy one.

Carlisle manager Pressley is also delighted to welcome McKirdy to the club saying: “We’re delighted to have Harry on board. He fits the profile of the kind of player I’m looking for in that he’s young, ambitious and hungry at what is a pivotal moment in his career.”
