Why Sheffield Wednesday may struggle to sign Sunderland midfielder

Sheffield Wednesday may struggle to sign Sunderland’s Lee Cattermole due to his high wages according to a report from the Shields Gazette.

Cattermole is a favourite at Sunderland due to his combative nature and the fact he has stuck with the team after their double relegation was also well praised by the fans. But while he has two years left on his contract, he may finally be leaving the Stadium of Light this summer after ten years with the club. With the Black Cats facing another year in Sky Bet League One after losing in the play-off final against Charlton Athletic, they need to cut their wage bill. And with Cattermole still being on Premier League wages, he seems like the ideal person to get rid of despite him having two years left on his deal.

For a while, it seemed like Sheffield Wednesday were going to be the team that signed him. Their head coach Steve Bruce knows Cattermole well having worked with him at both Sunderland and Wigan Athletic and thought his steel in midfield would help the Owls in their bid to get promoted next season. However the club have hit a snag in their attempt to bring in Cattermole.

The same reason Sunderland would like to get rid of Cattermole is the same reason Wednesday may not be able to sign him. With the Owls also being on a tight budget, they may not be able to meet the high wages he is currently on which would mean any potential move has to rely on the veteran taking a pay cut.
