Portsmouth bid for Peterborough United striker turned town

It was reported here on The72 earlier this month that Peterborough United had turned down two offers for striker Matt Godden, and it has now been confirmed that one of the offers was from fellow League One side Portsmouth.

Peterborough United chairman and co-owner Darragh MacAnthony has said that the club have turned down an offer from Portsmouth for 18-goal striker Matt Godden.

MacAnthony revealed the news on Twitter when asked by a Portsmouth fan, saying on Twitter:

“Not at current level. We’ve been offered what we paid for him and he’s scored 18 goals in 40-odd games since the step up. All the best.”

Godden enjoyed a successful first season at Peterborough United, netting 18 goals in 48 games across all competitions. He endured a difficult spell in the middle of the season, scoring just one goal from October to March, but enjoyed an upturn in the closing months of the season.

He will be hoping to add to his goal tally for the club next season, competing with Ivan Toney and new signing Mo Eisa for a place in the starting 11.

MacAnthony has been asked if the arrival of Eisa from Bristol City could spell the end of either Toney or Godden’s time at London Road, to which he has given a resounding “nope”.

Both have enjoyed successful first seasons at London Road this season – both enduring dry patches as well – and if Posh are keen to win promotion to the Championship in the 2019/20 season, they will need to keep goal scorers on board.
