Leeds United to slug it out with three sides for talented winger capture

According to the Daily Mail’s Mail Online website, Leeds United are going into a four-way tug-o-war with Wolves, Derby County and Sheffield United over talented young winger Liam McCarron.

18-year-old McCarron, who is currently on the books at Carlisle United, is valued at a relatively modest fee of around £250,000 according to the Mail Online’s article.

That figure, as low as it is, is easily within the compass of Leeds United who have admittedly said that they will run a ‘difficult’ transfer window this summer.

The Whites have, over the last season or two, placed a much greater emphasis in growing their youth set-up. Evidence of this can be seen in how they have brought in talented youngsters such as Pascal Struijk, Kun Temenuzhkov and Mateusz Bogusz from foreign clubs.

However, their recruitment has also seen them begin to attract domestic youngsters to Elland Road, youngsters such as Leif Davis, Jordan Stevens and Ryan Edmondson.

McCarron, who made 17 Sky bet League Two appearances (one assist) last season for the Brunton Park outfit would definitely fit the bill as to what Leeds United would be looking for.

Aside from the outlay, which is within their means by some measure, Leeds can also offer a youngster such as McCarron much more than signing for such a prestigious club as they undoubtedly are.

The Whites youngsters were highly successful last season, with both the Under-18s and Under-23s winning silverware. It would likely be to Carlos Corberan’s Under-23 side that McCarron would be signed to – they were Professional Development League National champions last season.

Whilst the lure of the Premier League with the likes of Sheffield United or Wolves, or the pull of Derby County might sway some, Leeds United also offer other benefits. There was a steady progression of youngsters either appearing for the first team, or involved in first team squads.

That involvement is unlikely to stop next season, it would be an exciting pull for any youngster wishing to set himself goals on joining a new club. It wouldn’t be something solely that Leeds United could offer, but there is a definite precedence that they’ve set.
