McManaman is a Hatter, a sign of Luton’s transfer strategy?

Luton Town have announced the signing of Callum McManaman from Wigan Athletic on a free transfer.

Callum managed to amass 22 appearances for Wigan last season in the Championship, with a solitary goal to add to his record. McManaman, the man of the match in the 2013 FA Cup Final, provides vital Championship experience for Luton.

Having once been tipped for greatness in the Premier League, he possesses excellent ball control and is not afraid to run at defenders and cause problems for the back four.

It’s yet to be seen how Luton will perform next season in the Championship however if their recruitment strategy is to follow the pattern of this signing, you can expect players who know the division well and know exactly what it takes to consolidate a healthy finish.

Hatters fans will hope that under manager Graeme Jones the momentum of an outstanding League 1 campaign last season can excel them up the table and a signing like this shows exactly how Luton may try to do that.

Momentum over the years following promotion to the Championship has shown to have the potential to make a real impact on the next campaign. The likes of Sheffield United recently and Southampton in days gone by is evidence that nothing is impossible for this Luton side.

Luton will be looking to McManaman to recapture that form he displayed at Wigan in order to drive what they hope will be a season where they confound any pre-season odds and remain a Championship side come May 2020.
