Leeds United to persevere with young striker says journalist

When it became confirmed that Leeds United would be bringing in young Dutch striker Jay-Roy Grot, there was more than a little head scratching from fans.

Much of it was based around the ‘Jay-Roy Who?’ line of thought. Quick Internet and YouTube searches brought the answers that assuaged and fan worry or doubt.

Leeds paid around £1.4million to bring the young Dutch forward to Elland Road from Eredivisie side NEC Nijmegen in later August 2017.

When he arrived he came with the reputation of being raw, but also a player with potential. At 6ft 4″ and with the muscle-packed frame of a boxer, Grot certainly looked the part. Fans were wanting him to succeed, they really were.

However, despite being something of a unit, fans quickly began to see things to be critical of. Despite his size, he didn’t put himself around a lot – didn’t impose himself on opposition defenders.

In total he featured in just 19 Sky Bet Championship games for the Whites providing an assist in a 3-1 defeat against Cardiff City and scoring his only goal for the club in a 2-1 loss against Sheffield Wednesday.

With the arrival of Marcelo Bielsa ahead of last season’s campaign, the immediate future of Grot seemed not to be at Elland Road, the youngster heading back to Holland on loan to VVV-Venlo. He featured for a full campaign whilst out on loan.

Amid reports of Leeds United looking to move players on, fans have obviously been wondering if Grot is to be amongst those to leave. That’s not how Yorkshire Evening Post reporter Phil Hay sees it.

Leeds United’s decision to take a fresh look at Grot could be linked to the season that he’s had at Venlo. Whilst there, he featured in 33 games for the 12th placed side scoring six times and adding three assists. He also earned a call-up to Holland’s Under-21 side.

All that combined might be worth the Whites reassessing their position on Jay-Roy Grot; noises coming out of Elland Road certainly suggest that to Phil Hay.
