Opinion: Would Arsenal legend be a good appointment for Swansea City?

Swansea City are still searching for a new manager after their manager Graham Potter left to become the new Brighton and Hove Albion manager.

Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry is the latest name to be linked with the vacant manager’s job at Swansea City

Bookmakers Sky Bet have backed the Frenchman at odds of 5/1 to take over at the Liberty Stadium, placing him as joint-second favourite with Gus Poyet.

A number of names have been linked with the position, most recently West Brom assistant Michael Appleton, who many will remember as the man who masterminded Oxford United’s shock win over the Swans in 2016.

Talks with the club are already believed to have taken place, but Appleton is not seen as a favourite with the bookies

Tranmere Rovers boss Micky Mellon continues to lead the way, and is odds on at 1/2, but Henry’s entrance into the frame could well cause some excitement among a section of Swans fans.

Henry has been out of work since being sacked by Monaco back in January, and previously worked with former Swans boss Roberto Martinez in the Belgium set-up.

Micky Mellon – 1/2

Gus Poyet – 5/1

Thierry Henry – 5/1

Cameron Toshack – 8/1

Michael Flynn – 10/1

Michael Appleton – 14/1

Aitor Karanka – 20/1

Alan Tate – 20/1

Gabriel Batistuta – 20/1

Mikel Arteta – 20/1

Opinion:

It is big surprise to see that Henry is being linked with the Swansea City job. His spell at Monaco didn’t go to plan but the owner seemed to have no patience as he sacked Henry after only a few months.

I’m sure the Monaco job will have been a learning experience for the Frenchman but he went into a job where big name players were not pulling their weight for the Ligue One giants.

If Henry was to go in and with a full summer behind him then he would be more likely to succeed. He would attract big name players to Liberty Stadium and the players, especially the strikers would have instant respect for the former Arsenal striker.

It is unclear whether the Swansea hierarchy have a genuine interest in Henry but it would be a big gamble for the Swansea chairman, Trevor Birch to take.

When looking at the all favourites for the job, Henry’s name stands out and I believe he would do a decent job at the Liberty Stadium.
