Dunfermline sign promising Middlesbrough youngster

Scottish Championship side Dunfermline have signed teenage Middlesbrough striker Gabby McGill. The club confirmed the new arrival via their official website.

Middlesbrough signed McGill from York City in 2017, and having impressed in the Boro under-18’s set up, Dunfermline were keen to sign the teenager on a permanent deal.

The 18-year old scored 16 goals in 19 games for the youth side in the North-East and Dunfermline boss Stevie Crawford will be hoping McGill can carry this form into the first-team in the second tier in Scotland.

The unveiling of the signing on the club’s website states:

“Dunfermline Athletic Football Club are pleased to announce the signing of highly rated striker, Gabby McGill from Middlesbrough on a 2 year contract after agreeing development compensation, after Boro’ previously bought him from York City.

“Gabby is an instinctive goal scorer with a great work rate and desire. He has spent the last two seasons in Middlesbrough’s category 1 Academy system.

“He scored 16 goals in 19 games last season, including four goals against Manchester United and he also scored against Manchester City.

McGill joins another former Middlesbrough academy prospect at Dunfermline, Matthew Bowman, with the fellow 18 year old arriving from Hull City’s youth system this week. Bowman is naturally a right-back but can play at right-midfield, and could be supplying crosses for McGill in the seasons to come.

Both players may not immediately make their mark at their new clubs but will be hoping they will get more of a chance in the first team than they would, or did, on Teesside.
