Why Sunderland move for Middlesbrough shot stopper makes sense

According to The Northern Echo, League One side Sunderland could move for recently released Middlesbrough stalwart Dimi Konstantopoulos.

The Greek goalie was released from Middlesbrough this week after spending six years at the North-East club. Konstantopoulos is now available for no fee having become a free agent, and is reportedly interesting rivals in League One Sunderland.

Black Cats Chairman Stewart Donald recently stated that current ‘keeper Robbin Ruiter will be on his way out of the Stadium of Light this summer, and the former-Boro number one could certainly fill the void left by the Dutchman.

Konstantopoulos is now 41 years old, but does look to want to continue to play football at the highest possible level.

Despite his age, the Greek’s experience in the Championship would stand him in good stead at Sunderland. He played over 100 games for Middlesbrough in the league, and was their first choice ‘keeper in both the Play Off Final-reaching season and their promotion winning campaign the following year.

His appearances in the cup competitions this season show he has still has the drive and talent shown in years gone by, and would certainly be a good asset to a promotion-chasing Sunderland side.

If “Dimi” was to join the League One side, he would link up with former-Boro captain Grant Leadbitter, who has been a revelation since arriving. The veteran shot stopper would add even more experience to a relatively youthful squad littered with those who have been there and done it throughout the divisions over the years.
