Chelsea legend rules himself out of the running for Middlesbrough managers job

Aston Villa assistant coach John Terry has vowed to continue in his role at Villa Park under Dean Smith, amidst interest from Middlesbrough.

According to The Birmingham Mail, Terry would like to go into management, but isn’t ready to take his first step in this role at Middlesbrough just yet.

“In the long run that’s my ambition but I’m not thinking that,” he said.

“I’ve said as a player I got to the heights that I wanted to get to and I firmly believe that I’m starting right from the very bottom.”

Terry is happy to do all he can to help Villa manager Dean Smith, and was full of compliments for the gaffer.

“I’m not afraid to say that and I’m not afraid to do all the dirty work – pick up the balls, the bibs, the cones – that’s all part of my education.

“I’ve got a great teacher in Dean, Richard (O’Kelly) as well. I’m very fortunate to be able to learn from them.

It’s been something I’ve been planning for a few years and the experience and the day-to-day work with the defenders, the group and what the manager allows me to do has been fantastic.”

Middlesbrough parted ways with previous boss Tony Pulis this month, with the Welshman’s contract coming to an end. The club’s hierarchy are believed to be taking time with the appointment and resulting announcement.

Chairman Steve Gibson is considering multiple candidates, and reports suggested John Terry was one of the leading applicants for the vacant managers’ role.

Other names include former Fulham boss Slavisa Jokanovic, Jong Ajax manager Michael Reiziger, and Middlesbrough First Team Coach Jonathan Woodgate, who could be promoted up the ranks.
