Peterborough United close to signing Newport County left-back

Peterborough United are closing in on the signing of Newport County defender Dan Butler.

The 24-year-old is set to join the Posh on a free transfer with his contract at Rodney Parade expiring next month, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke on Twitter.

Peterborough have already started their summer recruitment and have signed defender Mark Beevers from Bolton Wanderers, midfielder Serhat Tasdemir from AFC Fylde and Frazer Blake-Tracy from Kings Lynn.

Butler, who is from the Isle of Wight, is expected to join them through the entrance door at London Road.

The left-back was a key player for Newport County in League Two this past season and helped them get to the Play-Off final. He played 60 times in all competitions for Michael Flynn’s side, scoring four goals and gaining six assists.

Butler started his career at Portsmouth and rose up through the youth ranks at Fratton Park. He made his first-team debut for Pompey in August 2012 in a League Cup tie against Plymouth Argyle.

He enjoyed loan spells in non-league with Havant and Waterlooville Town and Aldershot Town before going onto make 54 appearances for Portsmouth.

Butler was released by Pompey in May 2015 and subsequently join Torquay United for a season in the National League before signing for Newport in 2016.

He has since played over 100 games for the Welsh side and has won their Player of the Year for the past two campaigns.

He is now looking forward to the next chapter of his career and it looks likely to be at next season’s League One promotion hopefuls Peterborough United.
