Three centre-backs Blackburn Rovers should target if they miss out on Patrick Bauer deal

It has been widely reported for some time now that Blackburn Rovers are keen to sign defender Patrick Bauer from Charlton Athletic.

Blackburn Rovers were interested in signing Patrick Bauer from Charlton Athletic in the summer transfer window prior to the start of the 2018/19 Championship season but saw their attempts knocked back.

Over the past few months, links between Rovers and the Charlton centre-back have emerged once again, with Addicks boss Lee Bowyer saying that Bauer would be leaving the club to play in the Championship if they failed to win promotion to the Championship.

Now, however, Charlton Athletic have boosted their chances of keeping Bauer by winning promotion via the play-offs, with a late goal from Bauer himself defeating Sunderland at Wembley. Bowyer has said that they will now offer the defender a new deal to try and keep him at the club, denting Rovers’ hopes of a deal.

Here are three alternative targets Rovers should look at pursuing if fail in their chase for Bauer’s signature.

Ryan Tafazolli

Ryan Tafazolli is available on a free transfer after it was confirmed he will not be penning a new deal at Peterborough United. The 27-year-old was a strong performer during his three years at the Posh, playing 131 times. He is keen to test himself in the Championship and Rovers could be a good fit for the 196cm man.

Tom Lockyer

Tom Lockyer is attracting interest from Championship sides Nottingham Forest and Hull City after it was confirmed he would be leaving Bristol Rovers this summer. He played a crucial role in the club’s rise up the football league and has represented Wales on international duty. Lockyer too his keen to test himself in the Championship.

Tommy Elphick

Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick is another centre-back out of contract at the end of the season and could be leaving the club. The 31-year-old would bring even more Championship experience to the club’s back line, he has played nearly 150 games in the second tier, adding 186 League One appearances to that as well.
