Richard Keogh claims play-off final is why you play football

Derby County’s Richard Keogh has told the club website that occasions like Monday’s Sky Bet Championship play-off final is why you play football.

After just about qualifying for the Championship play-offs on the final day of the season, Derby grabbed headlines with a stunning comeback against Leeds United in the semi-finals which means they will go to Wembley on Monday to take on Aston Villa. This is the biggest game Derby will have played since they were last in the play-off final in 2014 when they lost to QPR.

With a sell-out crowd at Wembley and a place in the Premier League on the line, there aren’t many bigger matches in the football season. And while many might wilt under the pressure, Keogh cannot wait to play in this match. He has said that games like this are why you become a footballer in the first place and that he can’t wait to get on the pitch on Monday.

He said: “It is a big stage, if not one of the most watched games in football,”

“Everyone labels it financially-wise, but in general everyone looks forward to this kind of game, the Championship Final.”

“You have got to try and treat it as normal as possible; that is easier said than done, but with the group we have got, I think we have shown we can handle the big stage.”

“We have been to some big places this season and performed well. Every kid growing up, if you are Irish, you want to score the winner at Lansdowne Road, or the Aviva Stadium, if are English you want to score at Wembley. You dream of that as a youngster playing in your back garden.”

“This is the moment that you are all in it for and this is why you work so hard. You want to play in big games and you want to play in big stadiums.”

“I think it is just a great opportunity for us to go and show everyone what a great team we are.”

“It is exciting and I think we have to use that excitement and that nervous energy that both teams are going to have. You have just got to embrace it and enjoy the challenge.”
