Connor Jennings says Tranmere Rovers learned more from Wembley loss than Wembley success

Tranmere Rovers’ Connor Jennings has told the Liverpool Echo that he learned more from losing in a play-off final than he did when he won.

Tranmere have had plenty of experience of play-off finals in recent years. Back when they were in the Vanarama National, they played in two play-off finals in a row. In the first final they played Forest Green Rovers and they lost, condemning them to another season in non-league football. They returned to Wembley in the following year to play against Boreham Wood and that time they won and secured promotion.

They are now in another play-off final this season and they will be playing against Newport County for promotion from Sky Bet League Two. Many of the players are now looking at Jennings for inspiration as he played in both of those play-off finals when they were in the Conference. When asked about playing in those matches, he said he learned more about how to win in high-pressure situations from the game he lost rather than the one they won.

He said: “You never want to lose at Wembley, but certainly, it gives you a lot more strength and shows your true colours to come back from it”,

“We’ve had the good and bad, and hopefully it’s another good one.”

“It’s massive: being in the surroundings, the occasion, and we’re looking forward to another day of it.”

“It’s the third year on the bounce, so the fans probably don’t expect anything less”, added Jennings.”

“It would be a great achievement to get the club back in a league that is a lot more suited to them, hopefully we can do that.”

“I know the standards of the club; I know what the expectations are and I know where the club should be. It’s been a great season all round, and we’ve just got one final game.”
