Premier League winning captain ‘one of the top candidates’ for Middlesbrough job

According to talkSPORT2, Middlesbrough are considering former-Chelsea and England defender John Terry for their vacant managers’ position.

The report states that Terry is one of Middlesbrough’s ‘top candidates’ to become the new manager of the club, and may be interviewed in due course.

Terry retired at the end of last season after spending a year at Aston Villa, having previously spent 21 years at Chelsea. During that time he won the Premier League title five times, captaining the side on each of the five occasions.

The 38-year old is currently Assistant Head Coach to Dean Smith at Villa Park, and has helped the club to achieve back to back Play Off final appearances, overcoming rivals West Brom on penalties in this year’s semi-final.

Terry has seen former teammates Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard both go into management with successful first seasons under their belts with Derby County and Rangers respectively. Now Middlesbrough could offer Terry’s first taste of senior management as early as next season.

Plenty of names have been thrown into the fold for the vacant manager’s position at Boro, with the likes of Jonathan Woodgate, Chris Hughton and Slavisa Jokanovic all linked, and Nigel Pearson and even Argentina legend Gabriel Batistuta expressing an interest.

Following the departure of Tony Pulis last week, the Middlesbrough hierarchy are now looking into finding a replacement as soon as possible. This would give a new boss time in the transfer window, as well as a full pre-season in charge before the commencement of the Championship season in August.
