Since Premier League relegation Reading have, it’s fair to say, struggled to find any real consistency. The last two seasons consecutive 20th place finishes have left little from a neutral’s perspective to ponder upon but the prospect of Reading’s relegation to the third tier.
When Paul Clement left his post at the start of December they sat in 21st having won four of their first Twenty games.
However, it could be argued now that momentum is building in Berkshire. Despite potential struggles with the need to meet Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules, Gomes has shown to have been giving the opportunity to youth players coming through and demands that each player performs to their full potential.
With the likes of Loader and Olise moved up from the academy and the impressive form shown by Meite and Swift, optimism has once again found its place at the Madejski with a team Reading fans can really get behind.
A mixture of youth and some stand out performances under the attractive football of Gomes has seen the club suffer only three losses from their final Twelve games, picking up points from the teams eventually finishing in the top Six along the way.
It’s not just on the pitch where impressive performances have been shown. Fan group Club1871 have been in full voice lifting the players, having been set up to rival no standing rules and a perceived lack of atmosphere. They have really started to generate noise on the terraces, making the Madejski a more hostile environment for the away side.
It is unlikely that a season fighting for survival is in store next season and, with the right ethos and the retainment of key players, this could be a year to really sing about.
