Top 50 Players of the EFL – 15th: John McGinn (Aston Villa)

Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has been voted by you as the 15th best player in the EFL.

Over the last month, we have been gathering votes from you to find the best managers and players in the EFL. And after counting the votes, we have discovered you think that McGinn is the 15th best player in the Football League. This is the first time that he has been on the Top 50 Players countdown.

Since being relegated from the Premier League, Aston Villa have spent a lot of money on players to get them back into the top tier. Some of them have worked out, others haven’t. Obviously, when you spend a lot of money on a player that ends up being very poor, there’s a lot of suspicion and mistrust because you worry that your next big signing is also going to be a flop. However it’s interesting to see that despite all the big name signings Villa have made, it’s a player who almost crept under the radar that made such a big impact.

When McGinn signed for Villa last summer, many were wondering who he is as he had only played in Scottish football before this move. Villa fans soon fell in love with his marvellous midfield displays and everyone else soon learned the name when he scored one of the goals of the season against Sheffield Wednesday. This season he made 49 appearances, scoring six goals, and has one final job to do against Derby County in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final.
