Lee Cattermole says Sunderland fans “have got their club back”

Sunderland have booked their place in the League One Play-Off final after their 1-0 aggregate win over Portsmouth.

The Black Cats now have a chance of an immediate return to the Championship and will face either Charlton Athletic or Doncaster Rovers at Wembley for a place in the second tier.

Cattermole, who has played for the North-East side since 2009, was delighted that they got through and said, as per the Sunderland Echo: “If you go away from home with a one goal lead in a play-off semi-final then that is the performance you want.

To a man over both legs the players have responded really well to a difficult end to the season and I thought we were different class, the gaffer said at half-time we could be better on the ball at the break, we knew that and we improved.

He added: “Our mentality going into the game was really strong. We have now had two clean sheets against them, they are an experienced bunch of lads and we have had some tough games against them. We stood up, we did well and deserve to go through.”

“The fans will think they have got their club back and we have worked hard at that, going out into the community, worked really hard off the pitch and got some massive attendances”.

1,300 Sunderland fans made the monster journey to Fratton Park last night but will have gone home delighted after a 0-0 draw did the job after Chris Maguire’s goal in the first leg was enough for the Black Cats to get to Wembley.
