Leganes keen to make Middlesbrough striker’s loan deal permanent but asking price may be too high

Middlesbrough striker Martin Braithwaite is currently plying his trade out on loan in La Liga with Leganes and he has enjoyed a successful spell so far.

According to Gazette Live, the Spanish side are interested in signing Braithwaite on a permanent deal, which would help Middlesbrough reduce their wage bill significantly.

With Boro hoping to ‘balance the books’, and with Braithwaite one of the highest earners at the club, this will be welcome news to the hierarchy at Middlesbrough.

As reported on The72, the Danish international forward recently spoke out about wishing to not play for the North-East side again, and many fans will be glad to see the back of Braithwaite.

“I’m not coming back to Middlesbrough, I can’t imagine that” he said. “The team plays defensively with long balls. It’s really kick and rush. It doesn’t look so good to me.”

Since arriving in Teesside in the summer of 2018, he has scored eight goals in 36 games. To put that in perspective, he has scored three in 11 since joining Leganes.

Although the La Liga side are keen on bringing Braithwaite to the Estadio Municipal de Butarque on a permanent deal, the asking price set by Boro may be a touch too steep. The £7 million price tag on Braithwaite’s head may put Leganes off pursuing a deal, and the Dane may be left out in the cold waiting for a bid to come in.

Middlesbrough may look to replace Braithwaite with Genk forward Mbwana Samatta, but they do face competition from fellow-Championship side Cardiff City.
