Frank Lampard on Derby County skipper’s injury “incredible” recovery ahead of crucial West Brom win

It seemed likely that Derby County captain Richard Keogh was to miss his side’s crucial 3-1 win over West Brom on Sunday afternoon after he suffered a groin injury against Swansea City.

Richard Keogh limped off in the second half of Derby County’s 1-1 draw with Swansea City on Wednesday night, and it was reported that he could have missed their clash with West Brom on Sunday.

Derby boss Frank Lampard said Keogh would be touch and go prior to the game, but he was named in the starting eleven for the crucial game – much to the surprise and joy of Derby’s fans.

Now, speaking to the Derby Telegraph, Lampard has revealed that he had ruled him out of the game, before putting him in the side after his incredible recovery which saw him train on the Saturday before the game.

“I ruled him out in my head because I thought it was a groin strain,” Lampard said.

“It was an issue around his groin, but not a serious muscle strain. So he was out, then yesterday (Saturday) after training he was back in! It was an incredible recovery from him.

“He is old-school, a throw back. He loves the club, he will play through pain, and that is what he did.”

His strong performance in the est Brom victory made it Keogh’s 46th Championship appearance out of 46 this season. He has formed an impressive partnership with loanee Fikayo Tomori over the course of the campaign and will be hoping their form can help them through the play-offs and into the Premier League.
