Neal Ardley says Notts County deserved to be relegated

Notts County head coach Neal Ardley has told the Nottingham Post that they deserved to be relegated following today’s 3-1 loss to Swindon Town.

While the Magpies needed results to go their way, they still had a chance of staying up in Sky Bet League Two and the EFL going into today’s match against Swindon. They needed to beat the Robins while hope that Macclesfield Town lost in their match against Cambridge United to perform a miracle and stay in the Football League.

And for a while, it seemed like that was going to happen. Kane Hemmings gave County the lead from the spot while Macclesfield were losing their match. However the dream was soon ended with goals from Kaiyne Wollery and a brace from Theo Robinson condemning Notts to defeat and relegation. To make matters worse, a win would not have been enough as Macclesfield equalised in their match.

After the match, Ardley was dejected and said: “I feel as bad as the supporters,”

“We wanted to give ourselves a chance and do our bit and for the first 60 minutes it was everything we wanted.”

“The two goals we conceded summed up the season. It was two breakaways and we conceded twice.”

“I told the players that I can’t fault their effort, but I can fault some of your decision making.”

“We have conceded silly goals all season and that’s the reason why we are where we are.”

“We got our noses in front but this team hasn’t been able to keep clean sheets all season and it is painful to hear, but we deserve to go down.”
