Derby County’s Martyn Waghorn has told the club website that he wants to enjoy their last match of the season.
The Rams are heading into their biggest match of the season this Sunday. After failing to beat Swansea City on Wednesday, they will need to match or better Middlesbrough’s result in order to secure the final spot in the Sky Bet Championship play-offs. It can be argued they have the tougher job as they will be taking on potential play-off opponent West Bromwich Albion while Middlesbrough are facing already relegated Rotherham United.
Waghorn was talking ahead of the match and he commented about how if you are a footballer you have to enjoy matches like this where the season is on the line. He said that the team would have loved to be in this position at the start of the season so they now have go on and make sure they end up in the end of the season lottery.
He said: “You have got to enjoy these games,”
“You come here to win games, challenge at the top and I’ve been in this position before.”
“It’s exciting, you know what the end goal is, you know what the next few weeks have got in store for you if you get the job done so it’s exciting and you want to be a part of it and I look forward to it.”
“It’s a pretty big game. It’s been an eventful season. We have had some highs, good cup runs and some disappointments along the way but that’s what this league does to you.”
“It’s down to us in the last game. We would have bitten your hand off at the start of the season for the position we are in so it’s up to us. It’s a big game on Sunday and we look forward to it.”
