Veteran Colchester United midfielder Saunders happy to keep things organised

Veteran Colchester United midfielder Sam Saunders is enjoying taking on a vocal role in the side as he continues to use his experience to help the club’s push for promotion from Sky Bet League Two.

The 35-year-old Erith-born midfielder already has three promotions on his CV and could yet earn his fourth with latest club Colchester United.

Saunders left former club Wycombe Wanderers by mutual consent in January before being snapped up by Colchester United boss John McGreal last month. The player has signed a short-term deal at the JobServe Community Stadium and after putting in a Man of the Match performance against Grimsby Town, Saunders admitted that he is enjoying a vocal role in the side.

“After a few indifferent results and Harry Pell getting injured, I was brought in because I have a bit of experience to help the younger lads” said the midfielder.

“I felt that in the second half I didn’t help on the ball as much but I helped off the ball by getting the lads higher up the park.

“As a team, I felt that we were getting very deep which was problematic with their diagonal ball.

“I tried to push us up an extra 10-15 yards then the diagonal ball becomes less of an issue in the middle of the park.

“That kind of thing can’t be done from the side of the pitch so that is why the gaffer needs a couple of players in there to drag us further up the pitch which is hopefully what I am providing.”

Saunders’ Man of the Match award came after featuring in just his third game in over six months and the player was naturally pleased with the accolade.

He added “It’s nice to get individual rewards but it’s not just about individual rewards it’s about getting this club in the play-offs and hopefully being promoted.

“It’s about three or four more games and if we win all of them then we have done all that we can do.”

Saunders has never won promotion via the play-offs. His previous promotions with Dagenham & Redbridge, Brentford and Wycombe Wanderers have all come via the automatic route.
