Middlesbrough midfielder gives update on his future with contract set to expire in the summer

Middlesbrough midfielder John Obi Mikel joined the club in January, and has been a standout performer in the Teessider’s current campaign.

Middlesbrough are hoping to secure a Play Off spot for the second season in a row under Tony Pulis, and John Obi Mikel has been integral in trying to make that possible.

The Nigeria captain only joined on a six month deal, and it is not yet known whether he will extend his stay beyond the end of the season.

In an interview which appears on Teesside Live, Mikel spoke about his future at the club.

“I don’t know, I haven’t thought about anything” he said. “Four games to go, that’s all I’m thinking about.

“To be honest the next four games is what I’m looking forward to.”

Mikel admitted that he was unsure of what was next in his career. Whether he is going to stay at Middlesbrough another season or move elsewhere remains to be seen.

“I don’t know what’s happening, I just have to do my job. I’m a Boro player and I’m concentrating on the next four games. Then we’ll see what happens.

The Super Eagles midfielder started the most recent game against Hull City as captain, and Mikel was happy he could lead out the team in their second consecutive win.

“It’s been nice to be captain. It’s always nice to be a captain and lead the team. It’s a great team team with great lads, I’m really honoured – hopefully we can keep winning.”
