“Last 10 minutes both teams wanted to win” – Oldham Athletic fans react to 2-2 draw at home to Swindon Town

Johan Branger-Engone struck a late equaliser to earn Oldham Athletic a point in an entertaining draw against fellow League Two play-off chasing Swindon Town.

Latics took the lead after only seven minutes, when Mohamed Maouche’s free-kick was met with a Peter Clarke header but it was was well saved by Swindon Town goalkeeper Luke McCormick, and defender George Edmundson tapped in from close-range finish (1-0).

Just before half-time, George Edmundson wrestled Swindon Town strikerTheo Robinson to the floor inside the penalty box, and Swindon Town was awarded a penalty. Michael Doughty slotted home the penalty (1-1).

Swindon Town went ahead early in the second half as Kyle Bennett hammered a low right-footed shot in the bottom corner from 18 yards out (1-2).

But, Johan Branger-Engone produced a left-footed volley straight into the top corner in the 70th minute (2-2).

Pete Wild spoke to the club website after the game: “I didn’t think we were good enough. I thought we showed patches of what we can play and how we can play but we didn’t do it consistently enough and I thought you saw that in the result.

“You can’t play like that for long periods of the game and expect to win football matches.

“We’ve scored early again, brilliant. But we just looked one pace today. Looked lethargic, slow, off the boil. Which is disappointing really because of such a good week we’ve had.

“There were a few tired bodies out there, it gives us something to think about really going into the Easter period of how we manage the squad now. So it’s a learning curve for me and Chris [Millington] as well.”
