Sam Vokes calls Stoke City’s draw with Rotherham United bittersweet

Stoke City’s Sam Vokes has told Stoke-On-Trent Live that their 2-2 draw with Rotherham United was a bittersweet experience for him.

Stoke were hoping to get a good win against relegation threatened Rotherham and it appeared for a while that they were going to get it when they got a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Vokes and Sam Clucas. But in the second half, the Millers fought back and goals from Michael Smith and Matt Crooks earned them what could be a massive point in the relegation battle.

For Vokes, this led to a mixed experience. He had been out for a while with a groin injury and this was just his third game back following that lay-off. So to get that goal was great for his confidence going forward. However he couldn’t be truly happy because of the way Stoke ended up throwing the game away after looking like they were set for the win.

He said: “It was nice to get the goal, obviously, after coming back from injury,”

“It was a frustrating injury for myself, so to get that goal and hopefully end the season on a high, was nice.”

“It was perfect and I said to him (Williams) afterwards it was a great ball. It’s one you love to see coming over and that you can finish.”

“It was nice to get that and give us the lead.”

“Made in Wales, I didn’t realise that. I’d love to say we practice that, but I can’t say we do, but yeah, it was nice.”
