Chris Wilder has admitted his Sheffield United side missed an opportunity in the race for automatic promotion to the Premier League after drawing 1-1 with Millwall at Bramall Lane yesterday.
The Blades took the lead in the second-half when Cardiff City loanee Gary Madine slotted home after good work from John Fleck.
However, Neil Harris’ Millwall levelled in added-on time through Jake Cooper shortly after Ben Marshall struck the crossbar with a penalty.
Sheffield United’s two dropped points has left Leeds United, who beat Sheffield Wednesday 1-0 at Elland yesterday, in the ascendancy now.
Chris Wilder spoke to the Blades’ official club website after the game: “It was a difficult game for us and the attitude of the opposition made it tough from the off, in terms of how they approached the game.”
“I wanted us to play forward, we had to go and get the second goal. When you play backwards and drop off you invite the opposition on and things like what we’ve seen can happen. We should have kept on the front foot, play forward, play in their half an ask them questions of them. They showed more ambition but that should have helped us exploit the gaps that developed.”
He added: “Millwall were there for the taking, I’ve told the players we’ve got to go and win games and to win games you need to score goals. We should have gone on and scored a second and a third.”
Sheffield United take on Nottingham Forest on Friday at Bramall Lane before heading to Hull City the following Monday.
