Leeds United nearing summer deal for Scottish starlet

Football Insider has reported that Championship promotion chasers Leeds United are closing in on a deal for Motherwell’s 16-year-old starlet Stuart McKinstry.

A report from Football Insider has claimed that Leeds United are close to completing a deal for winger Stuart McKinstry, who currently plays for Scottish Premiership side Motherwell.

The youngster’s performances for the Motherwell youth side have been catching the eye of clubs south of the border, with Premier League outfit Southampton reportedly interested in the winger as well. However, it seems that it is Leeds United who have won the battle for McKinstry’s signature.

Including add-ons, Leeds will pay up to £400,000 to bring McKinstry to Elland Road. With a fee agreed, all the club has to do is agree on personal terms with McKinstry and his representatives.

The youngster is highly regarded at Fir Park, despite not making a senior appearance for the club. McKinstry has featured in the senior team’s matchday squad on one occasion this season, as he was an unused sub in Motherwell’s 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock.

He has two international caps at youth level, playing four times for the Scottish Under-17s side, picking up one goal.

It is expected that the youngster will join up with Leeds United’s Under-23s upon joining the club – providing a deal is agreed.

So, what can Leeds fans expect from the youngster if he does join the club? The Motherwell club website writes that the 16-year-old is a “tricky winger who combines pace, with a direct approach and threat in front of goal”.
