Leeds United loanee nets another as scoring continues

Caleb Ekuban was one of a raft of players brought in when Andrea Radrizzani took over sole ownership of Leeds United from Massimo Cellino.

He came with a goal-scoring pedigree courtesy of arriving on these shores with a 17-goal, 5-assist season behind him. The trouble with that tally was that it came from the relatively untested waters of the Albanian Kategoria Superiore and a loan spell with FK Partizani.

Despite showing raw promise and much willingness to succeed, Ekuban’s first, and to date only, season at Elland Road didn’t live up to his Albanian scoring streak.

The two-cap Ghanaian international featured in 20 Sky Bet Championship games for the Whites across the 2017/18 campaign, scoring just once. He also scored and added an assist in one Carabao Cup game.

With the arrival of coaching legend Marcelo Bielsa, it soon became apparent that Ekuban, despite his willingness, wasn’t a part of the Argentine’s plans going forward. With Bielsa being quite open about his plans, a loan deal out of the club was the best he could have hoped for.

That deal came about with a move to the Turkish Super Lig with Trabzonspor. Up to press, he’s featured in 22 league games for his loan side, scoring five times and adding two assists. This total includes another in his latest game, a 4-1 victory for Tranzonspor over Antalyaspor.

His goal-scoring form for Trabzonspor, as well as two goals in his first two games for Ghana, has led some Leeds United fans to question whether Marcelo Bielsa could use the affable forward in his plans going forward.

That seems unlikely, Bielsa preferring the skills and qualities of Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford. With Tyler Roberts also having the pedigree that pleases Bielsa, a return for Ekuban looks highly unlikely.

Trabzonspor do have a purchase option for Ekuban, and there have been noises from Turkey that they are interested in talking about their options at the end of the season. This would be the best option for the Ghanaian to take up, his options at Elland Road seeming limited.
