Leeds United eyeing up surprise summer move for Championship midfielder

According to a report from Football Insider, Leeds United are considering a move for centre-midfielder John Swift, who plays for fellow Championship side Reading.

Football Insider have reported that Championship promotion chasers Leeds United are eyeing up a move for Reading midfielder John Swift in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The report claims that Leeds have been keeping an eye on the centre-midfielder over the course of the past few months, and Marcelo Bielsa has liked what he has seen. The club will consider making a move for Swift ahead of the upcoming window and it will not make a difference whether they are in the Championship or Premier League.

Reading will be keen to keep a hold of Swift ahead of the next season, but if they suffer relegation to League One, they could face a fight to hold on to the former Chelsea youngster. The Royals currently sit in 19th place, four points clear of the relegation zone with seven games remaining.

Swift has impressed in a difficult season for Reading, providing six goals and three assists in 37 appearances across all competitions – especially playing an important role in their recent upturn in form which has seen them lose three times in 13, helping them out of the relegation zone.

The 23-year-old started his senior career playing for Premier League side Chelsea, where he made one senior appearance. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he was sent on loan spells to Rotherham United, Swindon Town and Brentford.

The former England youth international completed a permanent move to Reading in the summer of 2016 and he has gone on to play 105 times for the club since his arrival.

He has represented the Young Lions at every youth level from Under-16s to Under-23s, picking up 43 appearances in total for England’s youth sides.
