Charlton Athletic boss discusses links with Queens Park Rangers manager role

It was reported earlier this week that Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer was keen on speaking to Queens Park Rangers amid the sacking of Steve McClaren.

Now, however, speaking to the South London Press and Mercury, Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has said that he is flattered by the links with a move to QPR but insists he is fully focused on winning promotion to the Championship with the Addicks.

Moving quickly to dismiss the links with a move to the Championship club, Bowyer said:

“It’s flattering but I’m paid here.

“My job is to get promotion. It’s all speculation.  I’ve not spoken to anybody from QPR. I don’t know where it has come from. That’s what happens in football if you’re doing well – you get linked to other positions. If there is any truth behind it then it shows we are getting recognition for the good job we’re doing.

“It’s a good club, a big club. Obviously, it’s flattering but I’m not getting carried away.

“All I’ve done since the start of the week is focus on Saturday’s game. That’s my job. That’s what I’m paid to do.

“There is no change in my eyes. So Tuesday I came in and we trained as normal, I went to watch the U23 game and then on the way home I was trying to prepare with Lieven (De Turck) and see the budget for our pre-season tour.

“Then I’ve been at home watching three of Plymouth’s games.”

Bowyer went on to add that he has been offered a new deal by Charlton Athletic amid his strong performance at The Valley, implying that the contract offer was somewhat confusing.

“If I’m honest I don’t really understand it,” he said. “I think Richard Murray (the club’s director) will be in today (Thursday) to go through it.

“It’s a bit different to a normal contract that I’ve ever seen before.”

Amid the departure of Karl Robinson as manager, Bowyer was made caretaker manager until the end of the 2017/18 League One season. As caretaker manager, the former Newcastle United midfielder won eight games out of 20, helping the club finish in 6th place, before being defeated by Shrewsbury Town in the play-off semi-finals.

So far this season, Bowyer has continued to impress with Charlton. The club currently sit in 5th place, 12 points clear of 7th placed Peterborough United and nine points behind 2nd placed Barnsley.
