Charlton Athletic manager “keen” on QPR manager role discussions

According to reports from Sky Sports, Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer is “keen on speaking” to Championship club Queens Park Rangers regarding their vacant manager role.

Queens Park Rangers announced the departure of manager Steve McClaren on Monday morning. And, according to a report from Sky Sports, Lee Bowyer – currently managing Charlton Athletic – is keen on taking his place at Loftus Road.

However, despite Bowyer’s claimed interest, Sky Sports adds that neither he or Charlton Athletic have been contacted by QPR.

McClaren departed Queens Park Rangers after a poor run of form in which they won just one match in 15 Championship games. He leaves the club in 17th place in the league table, eight points away from the relegation zone and eight points away from Hull City, who currently sit in the middle of the Championship table.

Charlton Athletic is the only club that Lee Bowyer has managed since his retirement as a player in 2012. He first delved into coaching with The Addicks when he was made assistant manager of the club in July 2017, alongside Robinson.

Amid the departure of Robinson as manager, Bowyer was made caretaker manager until the end of the 2017/18 League One season. As caretaker manager, the former Newcastle United midfielder won eight games out of 20, helping the club finish in 6th place, before being defeated by Shrewsbury Town in the play-off semi finals.

So far this season, Bowyer has continued to impress with Charlton. The club currently sit in 5th place, 12 points clear of 7th placed Peterborough United and nine points behind 2nd placed Barnsley.

It is unknown whether a possible move would see Bowyer leave Charlton with immediate effect if a move was made by QPR, or if he would see through the current campaign with the Addicks as they look set to win a place in the play-offs once again.
