Leeds United joined by Newcastle United in chase for World Cup midfielder

According to a report from Calciomercato, Leeds United have been joined by Newcastle United in the chase for Boca Juniors midfielder Nahitan Nandez.

As per reports from Italy, Boca Juniors’ Uruguayan international Nahitan Nandez is now on the radar of Premier League side Newcastle United, along with Leeds United.

Tutto Mercato Web said that Italian Serie A trio Cagliari, Sampdoria and Fiorentina were in the chase for Nandez alongside Leeds United. But, it has now been reported that Newcastle are “on the trail” of the 23-year-old.

Newcastle manager Rafa Benites looks set to be in the market for a new midfielder this summer, with as much as up to three midfielders potentially leaving this summer.

Leeds could make a move for Nandez by triggering his £25 million release clause – but only if they win promotion to the Premier League this season.

The Uruguayan currently plays for Argentinian side Boca Juniors, where he has been since joining in 2017. He has played 48 games for the Primera Division side, netting six goals and providing four assists along the way.

Nandez featured heavily in Uruguay’s 2018 World Cup run last summer, where they made it to the Quarter Finals before being knocked out by eventual winners France. The midfielder played in all five games, starting in four. Overall, he has represented his country 20 times since making his debut in 2015 at the age of 19.

An energetic midfielder, the 23-year-old can play in both centre-midfield or right-midfield. Nandez is a strong tackler and a good passer but has the pace to play out wide when needed. He also captained Uruguay’s Under-20s for much of his youth international career, proving himself as a leader.
