Lee Johnson reveals Bristol City were “very keen” on Chelsea’s now £40 million rated forward

Bristol City manager Lee Johnson has revealed that the club were “very keen” on signing Chelsea wonderkid Callum Hudson-Odoi during the previous summer transfer window.

Speaking to Bristol Live, Lee Johnson has revealed that last summer, Bristol City were close to signing Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, before he broke into the first-team picture at Stamford Bridge.

Rumours circulated on social media last week stating that Bristol City were close to signing the youngster on loan for the season. Since Johnson has confirmed that the rumours are somewhat true.

“There’s a little bit of truth, yeah,” said Johnson.

“Obviously there are agents and he was a player that we were very keen to bring to the football club. His brother is a family friend of mine as well.

“Yeah, he’s a top talent. And he scored two or three in one of the games I was watching – and I thought ‘oh no’.

“Sarri had just entered the fray and he made a fantastic first impression and it probably killed our chances of bringing him in.”

Hudson-Odoi made his first-team debut for Chelsea last season and he has since been thoroughly involved in Sarri’s first-team plans. In the Premier League, he is yet to make a start, but he has played eight times in the Europa League, netting four and providing two assists.

He also made his England debut during the recent international break, coming off the bench as Gareth Southgate’s side beat the Czech Republic 5-0.

There have been calls for him to be given more time in the starting eleven and he has been heavily linked with a move to German giants Bayern Munich. But, the Premier League slapped a £40 million price tag on the forward to stave off interest.
