Stoke City defender set for summer exit

Stoke City defender Moritz Bauer is set to leave the club this summer.

The 27-year-old has fallen out of favour at the Bet365 Stadium this season and is expected to depart at the end of the campaign, according to StokeOnTrent Live.

Bauer has made just six appearances for the Potters this season and isn’t part of their manager Nathan Jones’ long-term plans.

He signed for Stoke for a fee in the region of £5.5 million in January last year from Rubin Kazan and penned a lengthy four-and-a-half year contract. He played 15 times last season but could not prevent the Potters from relegation from the Premier League.

Bauer, who is an Austrian international with five caps to his name, is an experienced right-back and was linked with a move to Premier League side Wolves in the January transfer window.

He started out with Grasshoppers in Switzerland and made over 100 appearances for them. Bauer was snapped up by Russian Premier League side Rubin Kazan in 2016 by the now Watford manager Javi Gracia. He won their Player of the Year in 2017.

It hasn’t worked out for him at Stoke and moving on looks to be the sensible move for both parties. It is expected to be a summer of transition at the Bet365 Stadium with plenty of comings and goings anticipated. Getting Bauer off the wage bill will allow Jones more room to manoeuvre in terms of signing players.
