Blackburn Rovers in defensive injury crisis with captain ruled out with hamstring injury

Blackburn Rovers manager Tony Mowbray has confirmed that club captain Charlie Mulgrew will not play in their midweek clash with Wigan Athletic or on Saturday against Sheffield Wednesday.

Blackburn Rovers skipper Charlie Mulgrew has been ruled out of at least the next two matches through a hamstring injury, manager Tony Mowbray has confirmed in an interview with the Lancashire Telegraph.

The latest update on Mulgrew means that Mowbray will not have a senior centre-back available for selection for their next two games, where they play Wigan Athletic and Sheffield Wednesday.

With Darragh Lenihan unavailable and Jack Rodwell on the sidelines as well, Mowbray will have some difficult decisions to make regarding who fills in at the centre-back role.

“Mulgrew has had a scan and has a grade one hamstring injury. He’s not making Tuesday and there is a fair chance he won’t make Saturday,” Mowbray said on Monday.

“It’s part and parcel of the game, we have to take it on the chin. It’s a disappointment for us.

“At this moment we’re without Mulgrew, Lenihan and Rodwell, but that’s football. We’ve been there before and you have to find a way and we will go into the next game giving it our best shot.”

Mulgrew has missed parts of this season through injury but has still managed to play an important role as captain in the 26 Championship games he has played in. From centre-back, he has netted a highly impressive ten goals with eight games of the season left to go.
