Tony Pulis reveals two youngsters are ready to step up to Middlesbrough first team

Middlesbrough manager Tony Pulis has revealed that two youth team players are ready to join the first team.

“If they’re good enough they play, it’s not about age,” said the Middlesbrough manager, in an interview which appears on Gazette Live.

“We’ve got a couple more that have joined in (training) as well over the past month who we’re really excited about – or I am.”

Middlesbrough have brought through Dael Fry, Marcus Tavernier and Lewis Wing in the past few years, and all three have become vital members of the squad.

However, all three players were originally given chances under previous management, with Fry getting his first taste of Championship football at 17 under Aitor Karanka, and Tavernier and Wing playing their first minutes in a Boro shirt in the Carabao Cup for Garry Monk.

Pulis has given chances to plenty of youth players in the cup competitions this season though, with Bilal Brahimi, Djed Spence, Nathan Wood and Stephen Walker all getting their debuts.

The boss was tight-lipped on who the two players close to the first team fold were.

“I won’t name them now but the two of them have got a great chance, they’ve been training on and off now for the last month. I’m pleased.

“They’ll train with us now and I think those two are ready to go. They might come away pre-season and they might do what Lewis has done.”

Pulis is referencing Lewis Wing’s loan move to League Two side Yeovil Town, which helped his development, and resulted in the manager giving the 23-year old a chance to impress in pre-season.

“I’d be more keen for them to get out and play and get that bit of experience that Wingy has had and been a better player for. If Lewis hadn’t gone to Yeovil, we wouldn’t have been talking about him now. That’s how important loan moves are.”
