Derby County and Blackburn Rovers among sides interested in Irish defender

Championship duo Derby County and Blackburn Rovers are two of the sides to have been credited with interest in Sligo Rovers’ young defender John Mahon.

According to the Daily Star (via the Derby Telegraph), Championship pair Derby County and Blackburn Rovers are both keeping tabs on Republic of Ireland Under-21 defender John Mahon, currently playing for Sligo Rovers.

The 19-year-old has caught the eye in the Republic of Ireland, featuring 24 times in the League of Ireland for Sligo throughout 2018. Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers are also keeping an eye on the defender, with Celtic reportedly scouting the defender during their 1-1 draw with Dundalk last Friday.

Mahon would apparently prefer to move to either Celtic or to England, with Derby and Blackburn the main options in England.

Sligo aren’t going to be willing to let the youngster leave on the cheap, however. Mahon has 18 months remaining on his deal at Showgrounds and it will reportedly take a “substantial” six-figure fee to prise him away from the League of Ireland.

During the 2017 League of Ireland season after penning a professional deal with the club, Mahon featured on the bench in every single game, but didn’t make a single appearance for Sligo. His breakthrough came in the 2018 campaign where he played frequently, becoming a mainstay in the starting 11.

Mahon’s current deal with the Irish outfit will come to an end in 2020 after he signed a new two-and-a-half year deal in June 2018. It will be interesting to see how Mahon’s situation develops in the run-up to the summer transfer window.
