Leeds United hopes of summer deal take hit as Swansea star says he wants to stay

Last week, Leeds United chief executive Angus Kinnear said that he expected the club to continue their pursuit of Swansea City winger Daniel James in the summer transfer window. But now, he has said that he wants to sign a new deal with the Swans.

Swansea City winger Daniel James seemed set to become a Leeds United player on transfer deadline day, with all the finances of the deal agreed between the two clubs and the player.

But, politics at the Liberty Stadium led to the collapse of the deal. Now former Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins was unwilling to sell the player, leading to a clash of interests with owner Jason Levein – who had reportedly agreed to sell James in discussions with Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani.

Leeds CEO Angus Kinnear said that the club would definitely continue their interest in the winger in the summer.

However, it seems that Leeds United’s hopes of bringing the winger in have taken a big hit. Speaking after Swansea’s 4-1 FA Cup win over Brentford, Daniel James has said that he would like to sign a new deal with the Welsh club, despite apparently being keen on a move to Elland Road during the January transfer window.

“At the start, it was difficult (after the Leeds move broke down), but I love playing for this team and for these fans and so I’ve concentrated on that,” James told Wales Online.

“I’ve got 18 months left on my contract so I’m just concentrating on playing. There are new contract talks underway and I’m enjoying my football here.”

When he was asked whether he would like to sign a new deal with the club, James added: “Yes. I love every second of it here.

“Playing for this club has been amazing and the way the gaffer has brought me through has been fantastic.”
