Rochdale, Middlesbrough goalkeeper extends Rochdale loan deal

Middlesbrough goalkeeper extends Rochdale loan deal

Middlesbrough goalkeeper Andy Lonergan joined Rochdale earlier this month on a short-term emergency loan, and made his debut last weekend.

The 35-year old was third choice at Middlesbrough behind number one Darren Randolph and veteran shot stopper Dimi Konstantopoulos, and joined Rochdale just one week ago.

The initial short-term emergency loan however has been extended for a further week, as announced on Middlesbrough’s official club website.

Lonergan joined the Teessiders as a free agent in the summer, having last played for Leeds United before being released. He has played twice for Boro since arriving, with both appearances coming in the Carabao Cup, with victories over Notts County and his new club Rochdale.

The 35-year old was the hero against County in round one, after saving two penalties in the shoot out. Striker Jon Stead and defender Dan Jones’ spot kicks were both kept out by the Boro man. He was then replaced for the following round by Konstantopoulos, as they again won on penalties, this time away at Preston.

Lonergan joined Josh Lillis and Brad Wade as the third goalkeeper at Dale, and will joined up with his new side ahead of their game against Coventry at Spotland last weekend, with the Sky Blues triumphing over Lonergan’s new side 1-0.

With the former-Leeds and Bolton ‘keeper looking to keep hold of the number one spot for the time being, there is chance that he could extend his deal further. Also, there could be talk of renewing their interest at the end of the season if he does perform well.
