Former Peterborough United goal hero returns to coach strikers

The Peterborough Telegraph has revealed that former Peterborough United hero Aaron Mclean has returned to the club as a striker coach in an attempt to boost Posh’s promotion hopes.

Peterborough United have brought in club legend Aaron McLean in as an ‘informal coach’ to try and help their promotion bid under Darren Ferguson.

McLean found a place in the hearts of Posh fans after a prolific spell with the club from 2006 to 2011. He scored 81 goals for the club in 198 games, before earning a move to Hull City.

Darren Ferguson – who signed McLean permanently in 2007 after a successful loan spell – has been reunited with the now-retired striker at London Road in an attempt to help Ivan Toney and Matty Godden back to their prolific best.

Matty Godden started life at London Road in strong form after joining from Stevenage, forming an electric strike partnership with the now Luton striker Jason Cummings. However, after scoring seven times in his first eight games, the 27-year-old has struggled for form. He has scored only once since his brace against Scunthorpe in October, bagging against Shrewsbury in mid-December.

Ivan Toney’s form has been less of a cause for concern, netting 18 goals in all competitions after a slow first few months with Posh. However, he has scored just one league goal since the start of 2019, and Darren Ferguson has acted in an effort to change the form of both Godden and Toney.

Ferguson spoke to the Peterborough Telegraph to say that he is happy to be back working with McLean, as the striker looks to kickstart his coaching career.

“Aaron seems to have snuck in through the back door,” Ferguson said.

“But I knew he is keen to get into coaching so I am happy for him to work here for the rest of the season. He’s a great character to have around and he will be a big help to myself and Gavin Strachan on the training field.”
