“Wow Scholes as manager” – Oldham Athletic fans react to the appointment of Paul Scholes

Football legend Paul Scholes has been named manager of his boyhood club Oldham Athletic, confirmed by the club website.

Oldham Athletic have announced that footballing and Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is the new first-team manager on a one-and-a-half-year-deal.

Scholes will be bringing in former Latics coach Mick Priest as his assistant.

The Oldham Athletic manager is part of an elite group to join the Premier League’s 100 club, gaining 11 top-flight titles in the process.

He has won everything in domestic English football, he has lifted the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup along with being handed 66 caps by his country.

According to journalist Mike Minay, Paul Scholes said this about his appointment:  “I couldn’t be any happier at the minute… there’s been three or four times in the last five or six years where it could have happened, I’ve not been quite ready, but I feel the time is right to give it a go & we can be successful together.”

“I want my team to be focused on winning, I know it’s not going to happen every week. I go into every game expecting to win, I go into every game expecting to be entertained… & I’ll be thinking of scoring goals… Joe Royle was exactly the same.”

“I think Pete Wild has done a fantastic job over the six weeks that he’s been here. I don’t think there’s that much to change about the team… there’s no players sulking, the team seems together and I have to thank him for that.”

“I want to, like any other manger, to turn things around. I think we’ve got a team capable of being promoted. Probably a little bit tight this year, but next year I think we’re definitely capable of doing it.”

Oldham Athletic owner Abdallah Lemsagam told the club website: “Paul has won everything there is to win in football.

“He is a man who will bring a lot of footballing knowledge and his hunger to succeed in management will be there for everyone to see.

“It’s no secret how much he has wanted this job in the past and how much he loves this club, so I’m very happy to bring him into our family at Oldham Athletic.

“Paul will have my backing 100% and hopefully we can work together to bring success back to this club.”
