Swansea boss Potter discusses midfielder’s Aston Villa transfer breakdown

Swansea City manager Graham Potter has spoken out about midfielder Leroy Fer’s proposed move away from the Liberty Stadium.

Swansea boss Graham Potter has told Wales Online that he believes midfielder Leroy Fer never “really wanted” to leave the club in the January transfer window, despite almost completing a move to fellow Championship side Aston Villa.

On a dramatic transfer deadline day at the Liberty Stadium, it seemed that Fer was set to complete a move away from South Wales. The Dutchman travelled to Aston Villa’s training ground to complete a medical ahead of the switch.

However, the Swans’ skipper opted to remain with Swansea after weighing up all his options.

“I don’t think he ever really wanted to leave,” Potter told Wales Online.

“At the same time, at the age he’s at, he might think if there’s an offer of a longer term, significantly more lucrative contract, as a human being, you appreciate there’s at least a decision to be made or something to consider.

“Once the club agrees that that can happen, you understand but when he weighed everything up it wasn’t going to happen.”

Aston Villa were not the only team keen to bring Fer in. French Ligue 1 side Lille and Turkish Super Lig outfit Fenerbache were also linked with moves for the midfielder during the January transfer window.

The midfielder will be looking to help Swansea finish the season strong once he returns from a hamstring injury. Graham Potter’s side currently sit in 13th in the Championship table, six points away from the play-off spots.
